Honey Mustard Pretzel Crusted Chicken Tenders With Hot Honey
Who doesn't love a good chicken tender!? Especially when it's breaded and fried in a delicious honey mustard pretzel breading and drizzled with hot honey!
We made these chicken tenders by grinding up Neal Brothers Honey Mustard Pretzel Bites and using them to coat pieces of our VG Meats ABF and hormone free chicken breasts and chicken thighs.
Try these on top of a salad, on top of waffles, or served with fries or sweet potato fries!
Meet Our Farmers & Producers
The chicken breasts and chicken thighs that are the star of the show in this recipe are Ontario farm-raised, hormone free and antibiotic free, locally sourced from our friends at VG Meats in Simcoe, ON.
All VG Meats products were born, raised, fed, processed and packaged in Ontario by the Van Groningen family who own and operate VG Meats.
The honey mustard pretzel bites used to make the pretzel breading in this recipe are sourced from Neal Brothers. Located in Richmond Hill, Neal Brothers Foods has provided families all over Canada with better for you snack options.
Zing's brand new Buzz Hot Honey was co-developed with Chef Christine Flynn and wow, this honey packs some serious flavour!
This bright, floral, and spicy honey is infused with natural ingredients including chilies, Aleppo pepper, lime leaf, lemongrass, and coriander was the perfect ready made condiment to drizzle over and dip these pretzel crusted chicken tenders in!
These pretzel crusted chicken tenders were served on a bed of Cookstown Green's Hearty Mix Microgreens.
Cookstown Greens is a family-run farm located 1 hour north of Toronto in Essa township that grows over 120 varieties of the best certified organic vegetables, greens, seedlings, garnishes and edible flowers!
The Homestead Farms eggs used to dredge these chicken tenders are sourced from a community of Mennonite Farmers. We carry their free-run, free roaming and organic eggs and all their eggs come from small flocks that receive a high level of care.
- 3 cups Honey Mustard Pretzels, finely ground
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Vancouver Island Sea Salt
- 2 x VG Meats Chicken Breasts
- 2 x VG Meats Chicken Thighs
- 2 x Homestead Eggs
- 1 cup Cookstown Greens Hearty Mix microgreens
- Buzz Hot Honey for dipping & drizzling
- ~ 1 cup Grapeseed or vegetable oil for frying
Prepare Your Chicken
Take your VG Meats chicken breasts and cut in half horizontally and then cut each half into 2-3 equal sized pieces. Repeat with the other chicken breast.
For your chicken thighs, remove from the package and separate each thigh piece (2 per package, 4 total). Set chicken aside.
Make Your Breading
In a food processor, add your pretzel bites, garlic powder, paprika and salt and process until pretzels turn to a sandy consistency (a few larger pieces are okay).
Pour your breading onto a large plate.
Dredge Your Chicken In Pretzel Breading
Set up a dredging station by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, beat your two eggs. One by one, take a piece of your chicken and dip it into the eggs and then immediately onto the plate with the breading. Flip the chicken over so that all sides of the chicken are covered with the breading. Set the dredged chicken on the parchment paper lined sheet.
Shallow Fry Your Pretzel Crusted Chicken
Line another clean baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Repeat for each piece of chicken. Once done, heat your oil on medium-high heat in a skillet. You want the oil to cover about a half inch of the base of the skillet.
Once the oil is hot, carefully add three pieces of chicken to the skillet and let fry for 1-2 minutes, or until the side is golden brown. Flip and repeat on the other side and then remove the chicken from the pan and lay on your clean parchment lined baking sheet.
Repeat with another three pieces of chicken. You want to make sure not to overcrowd the pan or you won't get a nice crust on your chicken.
Finish Your Pretzel Crusted Chicken In The Oven
Once all your chicken pieces have been shallow fried, transfer them to your pre-heated oven and allow to bake for 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven and carefully transfer each piece of chicken onto a plate lined with paper towel to absorb some of the excess oil.
Plate Your Dish & Serve
Take a large serving tray and cover the tray with Hearty Mix Microgreens (you can also serve this on top of a salad or your grain of choice!). Carefully lay your chicken tenders over the microgreens and drizzle with Zing's Buzz Hot Honey, plus serve some on the side for extra dipping!
